Higher Education Teacher Preparation and Support

Higher education in Illinois fulfills its responsibility to the State of Illinois through a tradition of quality teaching, research and service that both supports and works to improve Illinois' entire educational system from pre-school through college. In recent years, Illinois higher education institutions have launched and worked collaboratively on a number of new initiatives to support and improve teacher preparation in Illinois.

Associate of Arts in Teaching Initiative

Roughly one-half of prospective teachers take a portion of their coursework at a community college. The Associate of Arts in Teaching Initiative developed AAT degree models to attract students into high need teaching disciplines and facilitate the transfer of community college students into upper-division teacher education programs.

Illinois P-16 Collaborative

The Illinois P-16 Education Collaborative is a cooperative effort among Illinois educators to improve teaching, learning, and achievement statewide.

Illinois New Teacher Collaborative

The mission of the Illinois New Teacher Collaborative is to coordinate a network of services and resources through a state-wide partnership of concerned stakeholders in order to attract and retain new teachers and enhance their ability to promote student learning.
