Associate of Arts in Teaching Initiative

Roughly one-half of prospective teachers take a portion of their coursework at a community college. Under the auspices of the Illinois P-16 Collaborative, the Associate of Arts in Teaching Initiative developed AAT degree models to attract students into high need teaching disciplines and facilitate the transfer of community college students into upper-division teacher education programs.

AAT Illinois Education Template November 2005

The Illinois P-16 Collaborative/University Partnership's Associate of Arts in Teaching Steering Committee drafted Associate of Arts in Teaching models in Secondary Math, Secondary Science, Early Childhood Education, and Special Education. Once a comment period was completed, the models were presented to the state education boards for their endorsement. Community colleges are now able to submit requests to the Illinois Community College Board and the Board of Higher Education to offer these programs.

The Steering Committee wishes to thank the members of the AAT Workgroups for their hard work on developing these materials. These models provide students entering teacher preparation through the Illinois community college system access to standardized and quality teacher preparation programs.

As AAT degree programs were being developed it became clear that it was important to develop a conceptual framework for the implementation of e-Portfolios for teacher education students transferring from community college AAT programs to teacher education programs at four year institutions.  A committee of community college and university faculty as well as staff from the Illinois P-16 Collaborative and the Illinois Online Network developed the following report:
